He was a CIA operative who left the agency having been involved in a covert attempt to destabilize Angola during the 1970s and had a bout of conscience that took him to the outside. Along with Daniel Ellsberg, he's one of the people who inspired the movie Hopskotch.
I saw him speak at UC Santa Cruz during the 1980s, and of all of the ex-spooks he seemed to have the most depth. Seems to have disappeared from public life, probably out of frustration at the apathy of serious crimes conducted across the globe in our name.
