Damn good writer. . .sharp mind. . .but I don't see the big deal about his changing 'political allegiances'. . .you can argue that Bucks never really changed much. . .(ex. - if you are for small gov't, shouldn't you not care about the criminalization of pot?) Anyways, I find Bucks to be a little more consistent than a few of the drastic changes by others on this list.

Buckley is a very funny guy; I read an interview with him back in the 90s where he claimed that if he were a student today he would be "a socialist...maybe even a Communist." A professional contrarian, certainly; but I don't think his political beliefs have every really changed (he's always been a Tory/Paleocon, a rather unusual type in the US). He's obviously not a fan of the current administration.

Came out strongly against the war, and said so vehemently at his National Review retirement event. Has taken stands for legalization of marijuana, and differed from other conservatives on many issues. He fired Ann Coulter. Recently said good things about Democratic Socialists and how he understands why intelligent college students would be attracted to the ideology. I miss the old style conservatives who took a scholarly approach to propoganda, and used wit rather than mindless insults to make their points.
