I have to give this one star since Bart Ehrman is a bible scholar and historion (NOT a political figure). He is a self professed agnostic whose one of the more distinquished scholars of our time and certainly respectable as well. Since he's neither a believer or nonbeliever I consider his findings reliable since I won't have to worry about him having any theological axe to grind or any sort of agenda. His historical jesus books are the ones I like to read (even if he isn't a believer in his ressurrection and just thinks of Jesus as an apocalyptic prophet). However, I appreciate that he is at least honest , he doesn't break any academic rules when approaching the subject of Jesus.

P.S. the listing should be someone that changed his religious faith as an adult. However, Bart Ehrman is a good enough man/scholar to write about.

Dr. Ehrman's 'political allegiances' changing is a square-peg round-hole listing- he's an academic and researcher, not a political leader. His research isn't 'political'- it stands for itself and allows the reader/student to decide what he or she wishes to do with the information. Sometimes his writing style makes me wish he had a different editor, but I can't deny his intellectual powers nor his excellent findings.

Studied ancient Greek as a Christian fundamentalist in order to study the original texts. Problem is, he found that scribes over the centuries had written many different texts and they were often very different, some containing what appeared to be editorial comments added by scribes themselves. The issue of the "true text" appears to have been the one settled upon by Gutenberg, and subsequently King James (which contains many bad translations). His studies led him to abandon the theory of "inerrancy" because it made no sense that you should take every portion of the Bible literally when it is impossible to determine which version is in fact the correct version, even before you get to the question of whether translators are divinely inspired. He has recently released Misquoting Jesus, which chronicles his studies of the various versions of the Bible. It is bound to be very controversial. I have not yet read the book to judge. He now regards the Bible as a "livig document." Interesting, the parallels between the liberal and conservative debate about the Bible and the Constitution.
