Well, so far my boxer puppy is doing great.I had him on different puppy dogfood. He had gas and nasty poops. He has been on purina one puppy lamb/rice for two weeks now. After 3 days eating this food his poop is normal, and his severe gas problem is better. We could not stand to be in the same room as him before. I have switched my other dogs on the lamb/rice adult formula. They seem to be satified longer after eating this food. I am very happy with this food for now. I was worried I would not be able to afford one of the high cost brands. I read some reviews that said if you feed grocery store dogfoods your killing you pet. That made me feel so bad, like I should not have my dogs...... I am feeding my dogs Purina One, They are happy and healthy so far..

U can get a much better food without the by products and corn and with actual meat for not much more in price.

This isn't my first choice, but a good one for those on a budget. The overwhelming majority of dogs I have sen on this food do very weel, from shelter dogs to show dogs and the pets on the couch. I have to wonder what some of these people feed their kids and themselves when I read about how they feed their dogs. My Labrador eats straight Bil-Jac, but my older Pit Bull makes no bones about liking a little something else mixed into his kibbles. He doesn't care too much what it is , just as long as it is different. The little Pit eats pieces of concrete he breaks off of the sidewalk, so I really don't count his culinary opinions too highly. Feed what works best for your dogs, don't be affraid to try something new BUT remember what works. I mostly eat the same things and exercise daily, but I like change here and there. My dogs agree. I have a friend who owns a Jack Russell terrier. He was born and raised on Blue Buffalo and was horribly ill and thin. My friend got frustrated and quit buying the expensive stuff because it wasn't working. She bought some cheap, on sale, grocery store dog food : Beneful. He has been perfectly healthy ever since. One bite of anything else and it's off to the vet for some meds. Purina One is good.

My Pit Bull Lola has been on Purina One for about 3 months. She eats it and there are no problems. If I feed her some treats or something other than Purina One she will choose not to eat her dinner/breakfast. I don't know if she does not like the taste of Purina One or what. I have looked at the ingredients of Purina One and they look very bad because of corn meal, and chicken and meat by-products. By-producs are leftover chicken and cow feet, liver, heart, stool, bones toenails. fingernails, ect.

I guess I stick with lamb and rice due to habit. It just happened to be the food I first bought for my boston. And she (along with my doberman) has never showed dislike for it. Although I am sure that chicken & rice and beef & rice, as well as any other formula from purina ONE is just fine. I actually read somewhere that a vet recommended alternating the lamb & rice and the chicken & rice every three months. I have always heard that you should feed the same dog food for life. But who knows. I think either way, you are fine. As far as the allergy thing, I have never heard that lamb & rice is good for dogs with allergies. But I can say that neither of my dogs exhibit any signs of allergies on this food, so maybe there is something to it. It is just a solid dog food, and I don't plan on ever changing. It's got everything a dog needs to live a healthy life, evidenced by the people on this site who actually use it, which are where all the positive reviews are coming from. You'll notice that the majority of the negative reviews are from people who are just spewing what they read online from hippie websites. However, I don't discount the few people who have actually used it and disliked it for some reason or another. Common sense does tell me that there are going to be some dogs who do not do well with this food due to allergies or for some other reason. But again, for most dogs, this is a superb food.

Thank you, agent. You hit the nail on the old head. Purina has veterinary NUTRITIONISTS on staff and has been around a very long time. You could buy any Purina dog food and be assured of getting all the nutrients a dog REQUIRES, not what a human thinks is needed. May I ask one question of you. It used to be that lamb and rice was the formula to feed if you thot your dog had allergies, but now I see lots of people feeding it generally. What made you pick the lamb and rice formula? I will be getting another dog some day soon.

It's the first food we fed our dog, before we found out about real high-quality dog foods. Although it's better than the cheapest dog food, Purina One still uses brewer's rice (a cheap byproduct of beermaking with little nutritional value), chicken byproduct meal (which can include junk like feet, bones, undeveloped eggs and other things of poor quality), corn products (not easily digested by dogs and a common source of allergies), and wheat (another common source of allergies). Feed your dog something better if you can afford it...

I have a 4 year old mini doxie, and he's been on a few different foods since we got him. Initially I had him on some expensive blend that the vet recommended, but we couldn't afford it. I bought original Purina, but we had some issues with him eating his feces. I found Purina One Indoor Formula Little Bites, and did that for a few years, and he was perfectly fine! No more poo eating, tons of energy. I recently switched him to weight management because he is a doxie, and four, and I would like to prevent that fat doxie with a bad back possibility.

Yes, I realize that Purina One does not have a lot of whole protein products, which does frustrate me, but I do supplement with fresh meats and vegetables when I can. I am considering going to a raw diet, I just have to make it work with limited freezer and fridge space. (And convince my husband that its a good idea!)

All in all, its a good food for the price. I am always getting compliments on his coat and energy levels.

If your dog has itchy paws, he or she is likely suffering from allergies. Its not the FOODS fault! It drives me nutty when owners showed up at the clinic I worked at blaming the dog food for their pets problems. The dog would have had the issue regardless of brand, because its the ingredient. If you're allergic to apples you don't give Mott's Applesauce a bad review because it made you itchy. You AVOID allergens.

My Mom's dogs all eat Purina One Chicken kibble. Several of them have dry, brittle coats and chew and lick their feet constantly. They also eat their own poop and have very large stools. Two of them get frequent ear infections.

When I cared for one of them recently for a month, I put him on the food I use with my own dog, Canidae ALS. This was not a long enough period to see coat changes, but he stopped eating poop, his stools were smaller and he stopped chewing his feet. I suspect that he was having problems with either the corn or wheat in the Purina One.

Looking at the ingredient list, which is full of corn and other cheap plant products , I would not feed it to any dog. There's no reason to use such indigestible vegetable proteins, especially at the prices Purina charges. Because so much of the food is indigestible, you have to feed higher quantities, making it more expensive in the long run than better quality, more expensive foods.

For people who have done well with this food, I'd say try a higher quality food for a few months and see if your dog doesn't do even better.

To the naysayer’s that are attacking everyone for giving this food only 1 star and saying they don't have experience feeding this food; I want to let you know that I have had a dog on this and am elated that she does not consume it anymore!

If I could, I would give this food no stars. When I adopted my last dog, she was being fed this stuff by the rescue group and so I continued with it for a few weeks (rest of the bag) until I could switch her to the no grain diet I feed my other dog. She had the WORST gas from eating this junk, her coat was very dull with dry skin and she pooped quite a lot; I also noticed that she was wanting to eat all the time but was still very skinny. After switching her to my normal no grain dog food, her gas has gone away, she poops only twice a day, her skin and coat have improved dramatically (even the people from the adoption agency are amazed at how well she looks now), and she is happy to eat less twice a day while still gaining weight and now looking healthy.

I have read all of the posts and have never rated anything online but had to sign up to rate this dog food. My dog just passed away at 16 1/2 yrs old, she was a husky collie mix. She lived her to live to the fullest up to her last day and was fed Purina Lamb and Rice dry dog food her whole life. She was a very picky eater as a pup which led me to this food so I stuck with it. My friend has 2 labs and has switched countless times with "Designer" foods and is still having problems with allergies and lack of appetite, her fiance's dog just died at 15 who also lived on Purina. Need I say more ? We just adopted a small dog and his rescue was feeding him Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul dog food, I went out and bought it being very open minded, unlike some people here. Well, he could not stop scratching himself and chewing his paws....we changed to Purina and he's great now. Every dog is different just like humans but please do not listen to what everyone has to say negative about this food. Try it and you may be surprised but try it with an open mind. Had the Chicken Lovers food agreed wiht our new dog I would have stuck with it. I've had enough proof for me :) Good luck and lots of love and fun with your furbuddies :)

My roomies boxer eats purina one for large breeds and does great on it. They havent had any problems with the product at all. I personally wouldnt want to put my two chihuahua's on it.. not because its a horrible food cause i never used it but because of the bad name on it. My chi's eat Blue Buffalo lamb & rice formula and havent had any problems at all. The stool is nice and firm and dark, coat is shiny and they are both full of energy. My girl dog is a picky eater and this is actually eats with out any problems. Purina & Blue buffalo is like any dog food ppl find something wrong with it. All dogs tummys are differnt and digest differntly like us humans they are Unique!

 I'm so glad I gave this food a try. I have a very picky minature dachshund and despite trying a variety of super premium foods with him, the only thing he would touch was kibbles n' bits. I was definitely not too keen on keeping him on the kibbles n' bits for long because of the corn syrup and high corn and soy protein content, so I decided to give a big brand name a try. I'm now almost at the end of a 13 pound bag and he still eats it willingly. His coat is shiny and his stool is firm.

Though I'd still like to find a palatable food with a slightly higher meat based protein content, I am happy with this for now. It may not be the best food on the market but it's better than a lot of other grocery store brands and I'm happy my dog eats it and is doing well on it.

I had a friend who actually sampled his dogs food to see what it tasted like. He prefered purine dog chow. REALLY the guy ate dog food to make sure it was fit for his dog.

The dog loved it.  We got the dog from a shelter and it was underweight, so I kept increasing the amount of food (up to 6 cups per day).  He continued to shed a lot and to remain gaunt, so I had to switch.

Could it be that you are all full of crap and that YOUR individual dog may age better, have a more shiny coat, be more spunky, and act "better" than others? If you are a standard dog owner and therefore know nothing of what you are talking about just shut your mouth already.

I have nothing against Purina as a rule.  I have heard that recent studies show that lamb and rice recipes lack Taurine...and can cause long-term problems.  Apparently Taurine is not added to Purina's Lamb and Rice Purina One.  This is fairly new and many companies have added Taurine due to the studies but Purina One from what I have heard has not.  I've used Purina One Chicken.  Chicken Recipes don't have this problem.

Sure, there are "higher quality" foods out there, but I have done my research and won't never put my dog on anything I thought would harm her. She has been on Purina one for 6 years and has NEVER thrown up, had diarrhea, skin allergies, etc. She also couldn't be more playful and never "refuses" to eat it. Perhaps it's a dog-by-dog thing with pet food, but I will never take her off of it.

Too many fillers and not enough meat. My 9 month old border collie had HORRIBLE gas, very soft stools, extreme doggy smell, bad breath, and low energy while on the puppy food. Not to mention he refuses to eat it, unless exercised to the point of starvation. I'm switching to Canidae and not looking back...which I'll actually be feeding him 1/2 as much with the new dog food.

While I've already reviewed this food, I have never used Purina One puppy formula until recently ... so wanted to share my opinions on it.
A few weeks ago we had a litter eating Merrick Puppy Plate, as I can only find Purina One puppy in the 4lb bag around here. I'm not one to be impressed by ingredients alone. However, the vitamin premix & chelated minerals in Merrick looked excellent & I was sure this was a good food. I started the bitch on this two weeks before her delivery and everything seemed to be fine. Pups were whelped without a problem, yet they were all, every single one of them, severely hypoglycemic at birth! Thank God I had a jar of molasses on hand to perk the babies up or I have to wonder if I'd be able to revive them. I have had some listless pups before, but this is the first time I've ever had to treat them for hypoglycemia. This was an omen of what was yet to come ...
Within 24hrs, the pups were struck with a horrible case of diarrhea, as was our bitch. Her stools were sticky & copious. The babies were rapidly dehydrating, despite supplementation. It took round the clock supplementation and a bland diet for the bitch coupled with kaopectate & amoxicillin for momma/babies to turn the tides and finally get weight on these babies.
About a week later, everything seemed to have calmed down. The dam's diarrhea had stopped, but her stools were still sticky. Then I noticed SCABS, yes scabs, on the pups!!! Two had only a few, but the two smaller ones were covered in them. They were thick and almost like brownish dandruff. It was reminiscent of cradle cap in a human baby. I have NEVER seen the like, or heard of such a thing in a pup. Now, the pup who was affected the worst also had a hot spot, and I know that if an adult dog has a hot spot, it's usually diet related ...
That prompted me to check the bag of Merrick for it's Omega 3:6 ratio ... well guess what? This wonderful holistic food had NO omega 3 fatty acids! I also suspected that the canola oil may not be bioavailable enough to the pups so switched them to Purina One puppy food. There was an IMMEDIATE improvement. I would not have believed it without seeing it, but after *one meal* of the Purina, the bitch had DOUBLE the milk! After 24hrs, the pup's coats were 50% shinier and the scabs did not return! This was approx 10 days ago, and the worst affected pup is now totally healed - YAY!!! Their coats are thick, shiny and their skin is now healthy. The bitch's stools are firm.
I mean this when I say it. I WILL NEVER SWITCH MY HOUNDS FROM PURINA EVER AGAIN.

Says meat but its moslty low quality grains. Bad commercial food. Just let your kids eat a Whopper for dinner every night its the same thing.

This is a good, digestible food, very similar to the upscale Pro Plan line by Purina that many dogs do very well on and breeders use. I like to use it in a pinch if I am out of the normal food I feed. It wouldn't be as cost effective for me to feed exclusively to 3 large dogs but the dogs love the taste and it is readily available in most grocery stores.

I recently rescued a 6 month old cockalier. I started him on Purina One Puppy. Unfortunately he was only able to eat this food for about 3 days before I switched him to Innova Puppy. After one day of eating Purina One Puppy he started chewing his feet and itching all over. Since I switched he has almost completely quit itching (he has now been on Innova for 3 days).I have done some research and Innova gets great reviews. My new guy is doing very good on Innova so far.

I have had dogs for the last 12 years (as an adult). I currently have a 12 yr old pugmix (in addition to my new addition) and recently lost my Papillon (age 11, rescued at 9 mos. from puppy mill) to splenatic cancer and my cocker spaniel (age 16, only had her 2.5 yrs, also a rescued) to various illnesses. For the first 8 years of my pap and pugmix's life I fed Iams and Eukanuba. I understand that animals, like people, have health issues but after losing my pap, not to mention my pugmix is almost completely blind due to retinal atrophy and is on Purina NF due to kidney/liver issues, I wonder if thier health issues haven't been caused by the food I fed for all those years.

Hopefully my new guy will have better luck in the "health" department.

We have owned our boxer puppy for about four months now. She was fed eukanuba by her breeder. We decided to go with purina one large breed puppy. She gets so many comments on how shiney her coat is and how nice she looks. Even the vet thinks she looks perfect. I am very happy with this food and will continue to feed. I think I should remind people that dogs have been around for thousands of years and they ate left overs!

I see two kinds of reviews here - the one-star reviews by people who like to talk like experts but really have nothing to offer but rumors and scandalous accusations, and the five-star reviews by people who have actually fed this stuff to their pets and seen happy, healthy, long-lived dogs. I have a Siberian Husky who is complimented every time we visit the vet for his yearly checkup - she marvels at his gorgeous, shiny coat, the spring in his step. She has no problems with Purina ONE - but I guess as a pet-care expert and the doctor for hundreds of dogs her professional opinion wouldn't matter much, huh?

If you are reading these reviews to get a feel for the quality of this food, please be responsible and disregard all the naysayers who think they know what they're talking about but have not one stitch of practical experience. Pick through those reviews by people who say they have actually USED the product and I think you'll see the accurate picture.

This food has gotten a really bad rap because of a few unsavory ingredients.  But in looking for a food for my dogs, I go by what works well for them based on their needs, activity, etc.  And this works for my dog.  I never meet a person who doesn't remark on how awesome she looks, acts, etc.  I take this to mean that even Purina with its poor reputation among some must be doing something right for us.

The company does animal testing on their animals. Food is very unhealthy and would not feed So much filler. When was the last time you seen a dog graze a corn field for supper. I haven't. :D

Everyone feeding "grocery store" dog food or even a designer VET dog food, should do some online research. Here is a copy of an online source that tells you about your food. Primarily all the BYPRODUCTS consist of anything OTHER than meat--like necks, legs, toes, etc.. totally disgusting. IF you think your dog is doing well on this food--then try a high quality food and it will blow your mind!! My 70lb Standard Aussie and 68LB German Shepherd are 13 &14 yrs old respectfully and have shiny coats, great muscles, eyes and energy. Long term effects of dog food is when you find out what you were feeding. After over 20 yrs in dogs and A LOT of research, I have learned. I feel a dog is a long term companion.....and crushing to lose. We all watch what we eat--but then buy the cheapest dog food based on MASS advertising and multi-billion dollar corporations...remember the last time you bought something based on the REALLY COOL AD to find out it wasn't at all what it "seemed"...... I hope you all take the time know you can ADD MANY HEALTHY YEARS--and not by the commercial that says you can. Good luck everyone!

My dog had been having a lot of digestive problems until I switched to Purina one senior protection formula. Whenever I read the ingredients, yogurt, rice and chicken is when I decided to give it a try. If it has yogurt, then there are some probiotics in it, and I can tell you that there isn't anything better for digestion than probiotics. His bowel movements are good and he hasn't thrown up once since he has been on this dog food. I switched my cat over to purina one cat food and she is loving it and thriving. GREAT FOOD!!!!

My dog did okay on this.  She had an upset tummy quite often and would vomit/get the runs every once in awhile.  She was healthy looking enough, but I can't honestly say she thrived on this food.  If you have a small budget this food isn't terrible, it's just not all that great.  It's tons better than Ol'Roy but there are many other foods than are tons better than Purina One that are just a little more expensive.

I frantically looked for a SAFE product during the Dog Food Recall crisis. Purina, and Pedigree had NO recalls. Their products have been my choice for canned and dry mixes since. My adult senior dogs are aging well, and show no signs of distress. They do not vomit, and are having their normal bowel movements. I must rate these Companies together to be the highest in the Dog Food industry. There are some others that may also come close to 'greatness'. I do feel comfortable about my rating. I use Purina One Natural Blends (Dry) either Chicken or Lamb mixed twice daily in with the Pedigree variety pouches, or canned choices. This has been remarkably successful for the happiness of my dogs. Beneful is liked (every once in a while) when I mix it in sparingly with the other items. Occasionally, I mix one (1) Mighty Dog can in with a regular meal of One Natural Blends dry, with Pedigree pouches or cans. I prefer to switch flavor and mix choices similar to the items served. I can even use one (1) can of Kibbles and Bits occasionally. Kibbles and Bits gives a very strong odor and is a bit saucy in its taste. However, when mixed with Pedigree, and Purina Dry every now and then, it can do well. I might mix in a can of Canidae, or Avoderm. Or even a can of prescription l/d, or EN to stabilize their dietary nutrition. There is no ONE steady diet that can provide ALL the pets needs. A combination of pet food is the best way to stay healthy. I provide a weekly menu of mixed foods as I would for myself. Eating the same food day after day can provide essentials, but also can become anemic in other values. I wish you success at your chosing. But PLEASE stay clear of the Companies that were on the pet food recall lists. They were NOT in the business of providing safe food, and should not be trusted ANY longer. Lessons learned!!!

I have had several dogs on this food over the years and I was always happy with it.  The dogs were healthy, shiny, had great stools....no problems whatsoever.  My first Boxer was raised on this food and lived to be thirteen (quite old for a Boxer) and he was never sick.  Neither were any of my other dogs.  Then a couple of years ago I jumped on the bandwagon and researched myself crazy.  I tried several 'ultra premium', 'holistic' foods (over two years).  I read all these reviews that people thought they were the best but none of my dogs thrived on any of them.  I've tried Nature's Variety, Innova Evo, Eagle Pack Holistic, Pinnacle, Canidae, and Flint River.  Yes, they are all good foods with great ingredients but I could never find one that was perfect all the way around.  I also tried home cooking for a while.  My dogs coats have been dull and faded looking and brittle.  I've had problems with tear staining on all the foods and completey inconsistent stools.  I've been careful to transition slowly and given each food time to prove results but haven't found any 'holy grails'. I've also had grass eating and poop eating the whole time from a couple of dogs.  All of my dogs are well cared for, spoiled, indoor dogs.  The only reason I switched from Purina One was that I kept reading how crappy it was but I can't ignore the 'proof' the dogs have given me.  I've gone back to Purina One and I won't switch again.  Eight dogs that feel and look great don't lie. And my vet completely agrees.   In closing, I find it interesting that all the good reviews on this food are from people that have actually been feeding it to their dogs with great results....and all the bad reviews are from people that haven't even tried it but just read the label and declared it bad.  As an added bonus, I've never had a picky eater turn away from this food!

I have 6 Aussies. I used to feed Old Roy although they seemed healthy with nice coats I decided to switch to a better food because of waste clean-up. I tried Canidae dry for about 4 months and came up disappointed. Their coat got very dry and brittle. It was just falling off. It was hard to maintain their weight. They all suffered bad effects from it. I was hoping I found the answer. I then switched and did the Purina One 30 day challenge. Within 30 days their was a remarkable improvement in all 6 dogs. Their coats softened up and became shiny, less stools, they put on a healthy weight again. No matter what they say about this product, I saw for my self that it indeed made a difference in all my dogs. I have been using it now for 2 years with no problems at all.

  Ok vet tech, lets answer some of your questions.

Why do dogs eat grass in the back yard...to throw up. Whenever a pet has an upset stomach they eat the grass to get rid of whatever it was that was in their stomach that they shouldn't have eaten.

Why do pets eat their own poops? They are not getting the nutrients they need from their food, so they are trying to get it from anywhere that they can. That is why dogs generally try to eat the cats poop. They are not getting enough protien out of the food they are eating so they are going to try to get it from anywhere that they can.

What about cats who hunt rats and mice?...It's called natural instinct. Yes, they may have eaten pesticeds, and that can definitely hurt a cat, but that still doesn't explain why a lot of indoor cats as well as dogs are becoming sick in todays world.

You're right, it is the people's fault for making this world unsafe for our pets. Through inbreeding, pesticides, and euthanization of healthy animals our pets have been suffering. However, it is also their fault for making extremely poor quality pet food that in the long run, has devistating effects on our pets.

And now, my Purina One review:

The first ingredient in most of their formulas is a named meat source, which would be commendable except for the fact that it is not in meal form and would therefore be about the seventh or eight ingredient on the list once you take out 70-80% of the water. This is especially bad since the next two ingredients in most of the formulas are brewers rice and corn gluten meal. You are therefore feeding your dogs grains. (FYI, Baron22104, dogs should have a diet consisting of meat, not grains...this type of diet could account for many of the problems that you have noticed in dogs)

The fourth ingredient is poultry by-products meal. What poultry? chicken, turkey, duck, pheasant, crows, road kill, euthanized pet birds...what? And, Baron22104 it is not "So What" to by-products. Yes, organ meat is great for animals, and if that is what by-products really were, that would be great...but their not. By-products are the beaks, feet and brains of the killed animals. If they were organ meat, the companies would be allowed to clearly state that on the label. (IF you don't beleive me, read a NV raw food label or kibble bag. They actually list the organ meat they put in the product)

Following this ingredient, we then get more corn, wheat and rice. Next, we get some of the two worst ingredients known to the pet food industry animal fat and animal digest. What animal are they putting in the food? Chicken, beef, lamb, road kill, euthanized pets from the shelter? Its disgusting that companies can get away with putting this crap in our animals food. This cannot possibly keep your pet healthy.

Finally we come to menadione sodium bisulfite complex. This is the synthetic version of vitamin K. It has not been proven for long term use and has actually been known to possibly cause health problems such as anemia, allergic reactions, toxicity of liver cells, weaken immune systems, vomiting, and many other horrible health problems that can shorten the life of a dog. Can you still say this is a good food? Dogs have the potential to live to be 20-25, and it is foods like purina that significantly decrease that lifespan by many years.

I think people are a little crazy. Being a student in veterinary assistant/tech, there are people who fail to realize that before there was man the dogs & cats roamed free. They had to search for whatever they could find to survive. Do you ever ask yourself why your pet eats grass in the backyard? Or what about their own poop? What about cats who hunt for rats and mice? Do you really think those rodents are eating the best of foods? You people blame your pets issues on many different food brands. So it has by-product. Big deal! That means whatever was left over gets cooked a certain way so that it DOESN'T harm your pets. It's not the kind of food you feed your pet....it's the chemicals and poisons from insecticides and rodent killer that harm your pets. And the way people breed their animals you also have to consider genetics. It's the people who have screwed up the world and made it more unsafe. And it's people who need to better it NOW before it's too late. There is a reason so many vets and shelters suggest spay/neuter. It's healthier for your pet and cuts back on the population. Look at all the pets in shelters. Everyone wants a kitten or puppy. But what about the older ones? They need homes to. There are hundreds on pets euthanized each week at ONE shelter alone. I know, I've worked at one. I've seen it all. And let me tell you, it's not pretty. In fact, it's heart breaking. Most of the pets we find dead or have to euthanize are due to neglect from people hitting them, starving them, and other types of abuse...as well as hit by car. But you crazy people want to blame everything on the many different dog foods. Why? Because you can't face the reality. You will always have to blame and point fingers at someone else other than yourself!!!

My first dog, a beagle mix named, Roxy, lived to the age of 16 living off of nothing other than Purina One Lamb and Rice dog food.  She was healthy, beautiful, fun and LOVED chasing tennis balls to the last day of her life.  So....with my current dog, Ellie, how can I think this isn't the right food for her as well?

I am shocked to see Diamonds ratings here.  I am shocked more about how few of us know about Diamond and Purina and others that actually put Dead Dogs and Dead Cats and Zoo Animals in their feed.  I am talking about sodium pentobarbital--the chemical used to euthanize pets, I am talking about Snot, Poop, Sick infected dogs, cats, they are all ground up and put into your dogs/cats food.  People!  Do your research!

I have had good luck on Purina One, which seems to be a step above the other purina products. Meat is the number one ingredient, my 3 dogs love it, and they appear to be in great shape. (shiny coats, eyes, energy, etc.) Plus it's a little more affordable ($25) a 40lb bag than the 3/4 star rating brands. I also supplement when I can with moist foods or meat.

Insufficient meat content, by-products, use of low quality grains and fat. The first ingredient in the food is a named meat product, but since this is lamb inclusive of its water content (about 80%) and this ingredient will weigh only about 20% of its wet weight once water is removed (as it must be to make kibble) it is unlikely that this is the true first ingredient in the food. It is the sole named meat product in the food. The next ingredient is Brewers rice - a low quality grain and by-product. Oatmeal is a decent quality grain, but corn is a problematic grain that is difficult for dogs to digest and thought to be the cause of a great many allergy and yeast infection problems. We prefer not to see this used in dog food. Corn appears a second time 6th on the ingredient list, in its gluten form, this is a waste product which is the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ. (the nutrirish part) The next ingredient is by-products, of unidentifiable source. Beef tallow is a very low quality fat obtained from the tissue of cattle in the commercial process of rendering. Since when did corn and wheat and by products become good for dogs?? Since NEVER!! There is a reason Purina Products are so much less than other dog foods! The quality, like any other grocery dog food, is GARBAGE!

I had my puppy on Blue Buffalo, Nutro, Natural Choice and Innova; they all gave her a bad case of diarrhea. She is now on Purina One and all is fine. Her stool is normal and her coat is shiny and soft.
