Its a gamble but for the most part if you to fix something expect to die.

But this is crap I can actually do! I prefer not to, particularly electricity since its mildly dangerous, but I can fix that crap...

This is one of the most important rules. Since the fuse box, wires etc are always located in the basement---where the monster dwells--you will never return.
