Can anyone explain how any unit can suffer 300% casualties?

Whatever Genghis the Hun says...I'm just going to follow him around awhile to retake the History, Civics, and Current events classes I obviously failed to engage during high school and college. That said, we stuck many a cross over graves on distant shores in days before body bags and cold flights home. Did the newbies know the statistics? Boot camp toward the end of the War to end all wars [again] must have been a 10-day course in field defecation and taking the socks from your dead buddy's knapsack.Isn't modern war better? We count the bodies generated by stealth hits and sort of demand the "war" ends before "we" lose 5000.Not a pacifist. Call me curious.

Many units after Normandy suffered over 100% casualties. That is based upon the total number of dead, wounded, missing, and invalids as compared to the original component of the unit. As casualties occurred, they were replaced by green troops from the States. My dad's outfit suffered 125% casualties overall, although in his particular unit, about 75% survived the war. The sad truth is that casualties were very high in the replacements and much lower in the veterans remaining in those units. There was a formula that if you served a certain number of weeks without becoming a statistic, you would more than likely survive the war.
