Viand Canine Growth & Maintenance 1

The first ingredient is lamb meal. Lamb meal is a popular ingredient in dog food. The second ingredient is chicken meal. Chicken meal is an ingredient often used in dry dog food and cat food. The third ingredient is brown rice. Brown rice (or "hulled rice") is unmilled or partly milled rice, a kind of whole grain.

This food is junk.  Look at the first five ingredients.  I put this in Iams cat... My dog licked and chewed her paws like mad.  I thought I was doing a good thing, holistic, all natural, but no good, educate yourselves!  Don't let titles fool you!

I agree with Averiz. Great food. I haven't been to the vet in years for my 3 cats. Don't want to take the chance of vaccinosis or some allopathic vet without any training in nutrition to try to sell me their grain-based foods full of toxins. My cats don't have hairballs, they hardly shed, their poop is minimal, never had to clean their ears, which is the real proof of the digestibility of the product. They don't gain weight, which is what most grain-based diets do. Just this fact alone tells me that it is a meat-based product. Corn is not a problem, and is an excellent source of amylase. They use human-grade whole corn and not the corn that cows eat. Bigggggggggggggg difference! Plus it is not the first or second ingredient and not a major source of the protein level. Someone said that the Viand for dogs is too expensive. If they researched the site for feeding guidelines, they would see that it costs about 45 cents a day to feed a 40 pound dog. I don't understand how someone can think that is too expensive. I guess 45 cents a day is too much for some people on a tight budget. After all, if you had three 40 pound dogs it would pump up to a dollar thirty five for 120 pounds of dog. I tried to look up Innova Evo and do not find any feeding guidelines, so I really can't say how much it costs to feed a day. I see NV Instinct lists one meat followed by 3 grains, so is it really a meat-based product or grain-based after cooking? At almost 2 cups a day for a 40 pound dog? Well, anyone who knows how to read a label can relate to that one. And the Orijen's feeding guidelines also seems to be alot of food for a little dog. Again, how much is digestible protein? All I can say is I am very satisfied with the food, and since I love my pets, cost is never an option as long as I know I am getting what I paid for. Just to save on vet bills is one of the biggest reasons I feed this food.

Hands down the best food out there. I use for my 2 dogs and they are lean, great teeth, and have never had any problems whatsoever. I called the company (you can too) and asked about the liver diget and corn. The liver digest has good enzymes and comes from chicken. The corn is human grade whole corn which is good for the coat. It is not corn meal, and there is no gluten or the other crap. I mean c'mon it is kosher for cryin' out loud.
An article about the corn -> http://www.viandpet.com/viand/corn
Also - $33 a bag is fine. I feed 1 1/2 cups of food per day for my 145lb dog and 1 cup of food per day for my 100 lb dog. Quality not quantity.
I feel I must add that Chicken Liver digest is on the bag. It is on the back of the bag where all ingrediebts are re-listed in chart to explain what they are for.
As Ron White always says - you can't fix stupid.

Ok, first off, IF their liver digest was actually chicken, they would be allowed to put it on the bag. Since, they do not, that means that they are NOT using chicken for their liver digest but instead, are using an unknown meat source. This is similar to meat and animal by-products. We are talking about road kill and euthanized dogs and cats.....NOT chicken!!!!

If that wasn't bad enough, they have this article on corn. The article itself is interesting and I actually may have done research to confirm if it was true or not. HOWEVER, at the end of the article, the write this "Get an ear of corn raw or cooked (without the cob), feed it to your dog and see what happens. The answer: Nothing. Let’s end the hype!" I don't know whats worse, Science Diet claiming that By-products are healthy or Viand claiming that having your dog eat an ear of corn and having nothing happen proves that dogs do not get allergies from "hypoalergenic corn". FYI, with many protien allergies it takes years to develop allergies to a specific protien source. Many people do not realize that an allergy to a protien may not result in hot spots or dry skin. A lot of dogs simply itch, get tear stains, or get gunk in their ears....that can all be results of being allergic to something in the food.

And the final nail in the coffin, this food also contains Menadione Dimethyl-pyrimidinol Bisulfite. This is synthetic vitamin K which has been known to promote such problems as cytotoxicity in liver cells, damaging the natural vitamin K cycle, hemolytic anemia, allergic reactions and eczema, weakening of the immune system, mutagenic effects, and many more.

So, not only is this food absolute crap, but they charge you an arm and a leg for it. $33 for an 18lb bag....thats rediculus. The only foods that compare in price are Innova Evo, Nature's Variety Instinct and Orijen....and those foods are a hundred times better anyway!

Do not feed this to your dog. It could save him a lot of problems in the long run.

My dogs have never been healthier with this food. The company is top notch for dogs health and anyone who loves there dogs will put them on this. If you take the time to go through their website (phdproducts.com) Everything is explained to you and you can call or write and ask them any questions you want and they are very quick to respond and help you out. Great product, company!

 Mostly good ingredients. BUT....includes corn.

Corn is a problem food for dogs.

2 meat products listed first means decent meat content, if not for the corn this food would ba a 3 1/2 star food.

Lamb Meal, Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, Whole Corn, Naturox®, Barley, Ground Whole Oats, Liver Digest, Kelp, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Montmorilonite Clay
