Duvall plays Frank Burns, the martinet army doctor, who is driven mad by the antics of the other medical staff in this anti-Viet Nam war flick. It was set in Korea, I know, but any resemblance to Korean war vets and the mopes in this film is merely coincidental. Duvall does a good job in his role and when he is taken away, he is oddly a sympathetic figure.

Robert Altman's first. Introduced overlapping dialogue to cinema. Possibly the first major film to take on the war - yeah, it was set in Korea, but it was about Vietnam. Duval's performance is what makes the Frank Burns character in the series so pathetic. They weren't the same characters.

Duvall was a great Frank Burns...I loved the movie cast and how they were recast for the tv show.

he played Frank Burns as my memory serves. he was funny as the horses rearend Frank always by the book, does not get along with the other doctors. except of course for HOTlips houlihan. they took him off in a strait jacket. he was very good in this role.
