04/08/2007 | Ludicrous plot but very well-done (as most of Will Friedkin's work). Possibly Hackman's best screen role. Cop movies generally don't have very convincing characters; 'Popeye Doyle', however, was fascinating: an alcoholic police detective living alone in the projects, his life completely empty besides his job and daily boozing, played to perfection by Gene Hackman. The sequel isn't nearly as good as the first, but Hackman's performance is even better, IMO.

04/07/2007 | This really put Hackman on the map where he plays New York cop, Popeye Doyle, in a gritty performance to catch a French drug dealer and his confederates.
