The legal process is good if enforced. America has one of the most effective and efficient foreign diplomatic presence and staff. Legal process is not the cause of illegal immigration.

As someone married to a foreigner, I'm obviously sympathetic to those who wish to obtain citizenship, as I can attest it is not an easy process, esp if you (like me) don't have $5,000 to piss away on an attorney. Nonetheless, it is important to note that the fastest way is not always the best way, particularly if it means if the applicants' screening process might become less thorough. Truth is, such an intricate, detailed process will likely never be quick, esp when the number of applicants increases each year and the Dept of Immigration continues to remain overwhelmed. Quality vs quantity; these are the two primary issues at hand...

I think those that are trying to do things the right and lawful way should have some incentive to do so.

StarkTruth - Not to be irritable, but do you object as loudly when St. Patrick's day parade participants fly Irish flags? Or Columbus Day parade participants fly Italian flags? Does becoming an American mean you shed all pride in your heritage? Certainly not the case with most Anglo-Saxon citizens.

The process, regardless of its time to complete, is not respected and won't be followed in most cases.
