FREEDOM FRIES!!!

Did France really do this though? Since it's in the EU, if an American wanted to immigrate there, they would have to be a Nobel candidate for physics or something.
James76255 12/04/2008
Technically speaking, yeah. If you make it where it isn't illegal anymore then you don't have the problem of it being illegal. Problem is you haven't really solved the problem you've just changed the problems name.
We have so many welfare and social programs now based on nothing more than the fact someone has their feet on the soil, we would literally be funding the world. Not to mention the national security issues this raises these days. Besides, look at France. Is that what we want to pattern ourselves after?

Throwing the borders wide open would invite a stampede of immigrants. They would overwhelm our programs to obtain legal status, the welfare system, public schools, jails and the like. Not to mention a huge influx of minimum wage workers (or even below and off the books workers) would drag the wages down and slow payraises to almost nil in countless job markets.

What we need is a real leader in the White House- someone who will "go crazy", a.k.a. actually abide by their oath and uphold the law. Open our borders (even more)? No.
me2221 02/12/2007
that is totally idiotic

When is the last time France had a good idea?
jamestkirk 04/11/2006
I hate this idea, but our borders are figuaritively and almost literally open.
Drummond 04/11/2006
Actually, this is probably exactly what I would do. Maybe it's impractical, but in my view borders are inherently opporessive - the idea that there is anywhere on this Earth each of us can't travel to simply by virtue of lacking of some tribal association is to me archaic. From outerspace, the only border you see marked is the Chinese wall, a monument to our warlike tendencies. Quite frankly, I see this as another non-issue being pushed by Republicans desperate to distract from the failures of their own policies and the Democrats' "culture of corruption" theme borne out of the fact that the Republicans seem to be capable of generating a scandal a week these days. The whole "war on Christmas" crap was essentially shut down by David Letterman. Nobody's taking social security reform seriously anymore. This is the last ditch defense in the most convenient scapegoat - 11 to 12 million people who simply came here to better themselves and their families, something I would do in their place. Our nation representes 6 percent of the world's population and we consume over half of the world's material wealth. We can debate whether this is due to the dynamics of Empire, or whether we are inherently superior to everyone else at business and therefor earned the right to hoard. but the fact of the matter is, people are bound to follow that flow of wealth. It's human nature. You can't stop it. It's not about the "illegal" as an abstract concept. We're talking people. Families. Children. And there are plenty of economists who argue that we shouldn't. The willingness of the migrant worker to collect lower pay keeps the prices of consumer goods and services down. They pay taxes, including social security taxes into a system from which they'll never collect. According to a recent Harvard study, illegal immigration causes economic multipliers that result in an average 1 percent increase in income for each American across the board. It may very well be what has kept us out of depressions for the past few decades. And they introduce culture from which we all benefit, notwithstanding those who whine because salsa has replaced ketchup as the country's number one condiment. So yes, open the borders. Let's starting thinking about dealing with these problems at the global level, rather than regressing to clan exclusivity because we're afraid that somebody bad might sneak across the Rio Grande (any evidence that any of the attackers did that?) as if the average Saudi terrorist wouldn't stand out.

Yeah, now the immigrants in France are treated like second class citizens and practically live in a police state with the way the law enforcement there treats them. France lacked the massive infrastructure to effectively assimilate those people who, by and large, were poorly educated even by "Mexican" standards. The government very quickly made it difficult for these immigrants with no skills to draw social assistance, which is required to access any kind of state run skills development programs. The immigrants are marginalized and herded into virtual slums. Small wonder they are having the riots they are now. However, I feel this is an issue where you cannot pick and choose. Either the border is totally open, or it's totally closed,

Let's just cut out the middleman, save the money and let anyone come in. That is what is happening now. The tootepaste is out of the tube--in, fact we are up to our armpits in toothpaste! The only way to stop this invasion is with violence. That is not in the cards. Can you imagine the ululating in the press when the first illegal was shot trying to enter? We are witnessing another great historical movement. Virile, lean and hungry hordes are invading and co-opting another effete, effeminate empire similar to the Goths, Franks, Vandals, Gepids, Huns, Turks, Arabs, etc. who invaded and took over the Roman Empire, first in the West, then in the East. The Hispanics, Orientals, West Indians, etc. are invading and taking over the fat, indolent, politically correct American civilization. The Eisenhower Administration was the last authority to round up systematically and deport aliens. Since then the Johnson Administration forced an immigration change through during the years the Democrats had a 2/3 majority in Congress. This changed the entire underpinning of the American nation when the quotas were changed. This was a combination of do-gooders, hate Western Civilization, and other maybe altruistic impulses that had disastrous consequences. Couple this with the destruction of our American industrial and manufacturing segment of the economy and the driving down of wages and need for cheap labor, and the will to oppose the hordes coming in collapsed. You might as well get used to it. It is a flood that can't be stopped. Also enjoy your era of homosexual rights, same sex marriage, political correctness, and feminism. As soon as the Hispanics, Mohammedans, and other such groups get an increasing voice and control in our American society, those political movements will be a thing of the past.

I have got to learn to keep the satire to a minimum and be more serious, lol.

What ever France does we should do the exact opposite, this worked out well for them.
