Each firearm serves a specific purpose, and it's that purpose that makes them unique. This rating system should be categorized into the types (pistol, rifle, shotgun, etc) and THEN we should vote on the manufacturer's models in each category.
A pistol is typically used for self-defense, or home defense in close quarters. Other uses are probably recreational (like target practice or plinking). Even collecting is a purpose for a pistol. Since there is also a revolver category, I'm guessing this one is talking about semi-automatics only. Semi's have a higher round count available compared to a revolver (some magazines can hold 16 rounds vs. a revolver's 6 or 7). Some people think that a semi is more "difficult" to operate (especially w/ a strong spring). I think it's personal taste, and the reason for owning the gun in the first place.
My vote of 5 stars speaks of the pistol's ability to be concealed and used in a self-defense situation. The element of surprise is key to defending yourself or your family. In close quarters, you don't want to be lugging a long gun around. But a decent handgun w/ a spare magazine will do wonders in a life-or-death situation.
For the record: I would recommend anyone to keep their pistol holstered unless you are in fear for your life. Brandishing a firearm is illegal in most states last I checked.
