 | oscargamblesfro (77) 11/04/2006 | A fine, underrated, ahead of its time Kazan film that I saw for the first time about a month ago. A prescient film that, in a nutshell, explores/ questions the role of the media in politics. Patricia Neal and Walter Matthau were very good, but Andy Griffith steals the show as a simultaneously likeable and deplorable fellow, 'Lonesome Rhodes," something of a drunken nee'r do well, (though one who can sing and amuse people) who, through the help of Neal's character becomes a huge TV star. He is known for his boisterous humor and down home witticisms, which are confused for sage advice by the public, who love his wit and lack of pretension. He is later co-opted by powerful figures and beset by various troubles. Anyone who knows Griffith only did 'Matlock" and "The Andy Griffith Show" should check out his hilarious but very well acted performance in this film. Underrated film that should get more attention than it does nowadays.
