We actually never get to see him as the villain. We only learn that about his past later in the movie. So Sharon Stone gets so pissed off at him about it, she won't even help him get a glass of water while he's chained - kind of like "I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire."
Of course, they made it up by the end and killed all the bad guys.
