I thought an electric ice cream maker would not need ice and salt but mine does. So it is not much better than a hand cranked one. I never use it.

Its great to have in the summer, because homemade ice cream is the best.

There's just nothing like well made homemade ice cream, and if you have kids it's fun to have the hand cranked variety. Teaches patience and the concept of work for reward.
