Isn't it ironic that the two most right wing presidents in history have run up the largest deficits. Reagan began by creating a deficit larger than all the previous deficits put together. And Bush doesn't even have the lame excuse of a Democratic congress, but he's managed to expand it exponentially further.

I guess I'm not quite clear on what an economic deficit is (perhaps the absence of an economist in his cabinet?) but the federal deficit is one of his poorest performance points. Having run as a conservative and having then governed as a country club republican he has done a very poor job of controlling spending, to the point he has done almost nothing to even attempt to curtail Congress' spending spree.

Conservatives (like me) are very disappointed in this president in this area. We (the USA) have a spending problem, we can't stop. Period.

Looking to a president to curtail spending looks like a pipe dream. Forget it. Congress spends the money, faster than they can replenish their tax coffers, and we all continue to pay and pay. Pound the table all you want about how Bush has done nothing here. Then point out a president who successfully lowered spending. Keep thinking, Bill Clinton did not lower spending in ANY area during his two terms. Tax collections rose, resulting in a major reduction of the deficit , even a small surplus. Presidents don't seem to be able to lower spending, only Congress can.

A catastrophic failure on the part of President Bush. With a reckless and corrupt congress pushing through spending bill after spending bill, it's up to the executive branch to provide the checks and balances.

Bush has chosen not to.
