Director Sidney Lumet's 1957 taut version of Reginald Rose's script made Henry Fonda's juror number 8 a decent, unpretentious man of values and common sense who questioned what he considered inconclusive evidence against the accused and so demand reasonable answers from a prejudiced or apathetic group of jurors. In William Friedkin's 1997 remake, Lemmon made his character condescending towards the other jurors. Not that Lemmon's (and Friedkin's) story was not viable enough; however, to a significant degree, there is little room for much empathy from the audience nor does it allow them to come to their own conclusions.
