 | Drummond (54) 05/11/2006 | Would have been classic. Calhoun was the principle apologist for slavery leading up to the Civil War. Garrison was a vehement abolitionist, who held "Constitution burnings" because he believed that any document purporting to represent freedom while failing to abolish slavery was simply an exercise in cruel hypocrisy. Garrison was nearly lynched on several occassions (one time for advocating women's rights), had an office for his newsletter burned down.
The militancy between the two, who were also great orators and writers, would have made for a lively and classic debate.
