 | Drummond (54) 05/11/2006 | This should have happened during the Prop 6 campaign in California in 1978, when right wingers were trying to get voters to pass a law that would have barred homosexuals from teaching positions. For a long time it looked like it was going to pass big, but Harvey Milk led the opposition so effectively he forced even Ronald Reagan's hand in opposing it as fundamentally unfair.
Milk was rhetorically brilliant of course, and was one of two victims of Supervisor Dan White (the last conservative elected to a position in San Francisco), who also gunned down the mayor of San Francisco. A debate with then homophobe darling Anita Bryant would have been classic.
