Justin Hayward has always been under rated as a guitarist because he is so multi-talented. He usually appears more on vocalist and songwriter lists. Most people not familiar with him or the Moody Blues don't realize how many instruments Justin and the rest of the group can actually play. Take a look at the backside of an old album cover from "In Search of the Lost Chord". The list takes up half of the cover. Since they have become more of a concert group than producers of albums, it is absolutely necessary for them to use orchestras to recreate their sound on stage. I have attended 3 of their live performances and have never been disappointed; they are usually sold out well in advance.
My opinion may be influenced by the fact I'm 57 years old and have been familiar with their music since their beginning. I'm very pleased to finally see his name on a best guitarist list.

I'm going to be perfectly unreasonable here as I fecking well hate the Moody Blues. I couldnt give a monkeys if he can play guitar. He could be Django Reinhardt and Segovia all in one and I'd still give him 1 star.

When was the last time any one listened to the Moody Blues and said the "wow listen to that guitar he is really good." It never happens if you listen to most of it you feel like your heading for the third floor.

Thanks Georgie20 for one of the most helpful posts I've read on this site so far. I will make my best attempt to be serious, as you advise!

I actually agree with a lot of what the others have said.

I agree with Begstealorboro that his guitar playing live is so much more complex than his recorded work but also that they are a relatively recent development.

I agree with Birse that his guitar playing will always play second fiddle (no pun intended!) to his vocals.

I even agree with leftfinger, he's not particularly known for his guitar skills, not as known as he should be.

I was very pleasantly surprised to see his name on this list.

Hugely under rated as a guitarist. Equally accomplished on acoustic as on electric.

I suppose it depends on the definition.

There are many considered great guitarists (naming no names) who just bash the most beautiful of instruments and produce a din. There are others who pluck definable notes faster than most people can type.

Hayward's guitar playing is crystal clear and in terms of dexterity he is up there with the best of them. His guitar playing will always understandably be overshadowed by his vocals, which are undoubtedly his main strength, and of course his songwriting.

That said, he's still an excellent guitarist and I agree, far more impressive live than in the studio.

I would totally disagree but I don't know if it's because I've seen him live several times. Seeing what he is capable of doing on a guitar on the live stage, particularly in the last 10-15 years or so, I've never been able to understand why he appears to be a tiger held by the tale in the studio when it comes to his guitar playing.

Great songwriter, but not known for being a monster guitarist.
