I loved the book, and liked the movie. However, I wouldn't have chosen Jude Law and Nicole Kidman to portray the leading characters. Law did a better job than I would have expected, but Nicole Kidman was totally miscast. Renee Zellweger was great;she stole every scene. I also enjoyed Philip Seymour Hoffman, and wanted to see more of him. Echoing others, something is wrong when the supporting players are more compelling than the leading characters. Overall, a pretty good movie, but I have no desire to see it again.

Not very good, but I wouldn't call it atrocious. Second the other reviews- when your supporting actress is more interesting than your leads you have a problem. . .

Very slow movie from a very slow book. A bad, unbelievable love story, with a tiresome chase narrative borrowed heavily from Homer's Odyssey.
A good performance by Rene Zellweger is all that saves any element of it.

This movie is based on Homer's "Odyssey." It really isn't too bad, but oh my, it drags on forever. That hurts it considerably. I liked the Battle of the Crater scene. I don't think that horrible event ever saw light on the screen before. The home guard theme was true in certain areas. The scene of the film is a mountain area, and the mountaineers were luke-warm for the Confederates, to say the least. In fact most were out and out Unionists. The love connection that was so tenuous to start makes us skeptical that such a loose tie could endure over such time, distrance and hardship.

Not really a war movie, kind of on the same line as Pearl Harbour. The war scenes are bad, the love story is bad, like almost every love story, and the movie drags on for hours, going nowhere. Very boring, very bad.
