I think his temper helped to hype him up during a game. He played a very aggressive game, and the temperament contrast was almost symbolic of the play style contrast between him and Borg.

John "Lambchop" MacKenroe - a distant cousin of volatile tennis star John McEnroe - enjoyed a brief and marginally successful tennis carerr that ended in tragedy.
MacKenroe - a devout, if hashish addled adherent of Zen Buddhism - didn't seem that out of place in the '70's. However, his misinterpretation of ancient Buddhist texts while travelling in Nepal led him to the errant belief that all things were living and precious and subsequently should not be harmed in any way, this included tennis balls.
This would have seemed the death knell for MacKenroe's career save for the fact that during the opening round of the 1974 French Open, an enraged Ilie Nastase leaped the net and pummelled the bearded, kaftaned American to death with his racquet for refusing to serve to begin their match. The French authorities arrested Nastase and forced him to pay the requisite fine prior to his release. Reports state Nastase fingered the aformentioned authorities vigorously whilst paying.

Intense, competative and a great showman. He gave his opponents his best and the fans what they wanted. It was all psyche for his opponent, and it often worked. I agree with him that tennis has got pretty boring in the Pete Sampras era.

His name is spelled McEnroe. Yes, he was a pompous a** and yes, he was a great player.

IN A WHISPER: (It's ill advised to give him the satisfaction of letting him know that he's geting to you. He's otherwise likely to go ballistic and onto the higher psycho category. Shhh!)
