He never pandered to TV's demand for dumbed down entertainment and attention grabbing stunts. Of course the result of this was a short 5 year run on the airwaves opposite powerhouse Johnny Carson. He actually got his start as a writer for the Tonight Show when it was hosted by Johnny's predecessor, Jack Parr. He wrote for Johnny for a time but moved on to become a performer. Carson said that his favorite joke Cavett wrote for him during his days as a writer was the humorous caption to a newspaper photo of Aristotle Onassis looking at the home of Buster Keaton which he was considering purchasing. Cavett wrote: "Aristotle Contemplating the Home of Buster."
