More plain than ugly. Then again, that whole "ugly" shtick gave her something to hang her comic persona onto all these past decades. As trebon1038 notes, she's laughing all the way to the bank. I don't think she's amazingly talented or particularly funny, but she doesn't offend or annoy me either, which is more than I can say for a lot of so-called "comics" past or present (although I did find her "puppet" frightening in the 1967 Rankin-Bass film "Mad Monster Party" and she was in a funny/clever episode of the old Night Gallery TV series with John Astin called "Pamela's Voice".).

in her earlier days she was not known for being pretty. of course she is crying all the way to the bank. she made a career out of poking fun at her looks. she has some cosmetic surgeries and she looked better but still made her self up to look "awful" she is also rather a talented pianist. quite a lady!

So ugly she's mentioned in the following pass of Jarhead marching cadence:

They say in Marine Corps
The women are mighty fine
They look like Phyllis Diller
And walk like Frankenstein

In the world of comedy being hard on the eyes can often be an asset, and this is evidenced by Phyllis Diller as Exhibit A. Unlike a "facially challenged" actress who must read for the role of Ugly Barmaid #2, an ugly comedienne can play off her appearance for an advantage. This was clearly Diller's edge, and she laughed all the way to the bank with angular features that would scare children and small animals. Phyllis Ada Driver was born on July 17, 1917 in Lima, Ohio.

And she made a killing off her lack of good looks....she laughs at her self and all the way to the bank...a very very funny lady.

I always thought of her as average looking really. Ugly became her stock and trade and she evidently made a nice living with it. That is until she'd had enough of it and gave in to a minor plastic surgery addiction later in life.
