Whilst I was in Rome I only used the Metro system once - the rest of the travelling was done on foot. I remember it being insanely packed on the train, if there was space for someone to breathe then they considered it as too much space and someone else would try and squeeze in.Before travelling I remember being advised of keeping a firm grip on my wallet and it's very common to be pick pocketed on the Roma Metro; however I didn't even notice anyone attempt this. A few days later in Athens however, both me and a friend both had someone attempt to pick our pockets though neither of us had left our wallets in our pockets.Definitely not as good as the Berlin metro system, but as it's about on par with the London metro system I thought it did deserve 3 stars.

The Metro Roma is an enormously large system which works very well. It is better than most cities in terms of availability and distances you can travel throughout the system. It is generally clean and efficient. With the Metro Roma, you can get to all of the sights of the eternal city easily and quickly.

I have to echo Magellans glowing review of this system.Although it's been awhile since I visited Sunny Italy,I vividly remember how impressed I was by the Metro Roma.

I was really impressed with Rome's public transportation system. Despite having the unique obstacle of having new Metro lines shut down because every time they dig they uncover something historic, Rome manages to move huge numbers of people around quickly and easily. The Metro subway system is solid. It doesn't go everywhere, but the frequency of the trains is impressive. But the real strength of the system is having a central hub in the Termini station. You can get to Termini pretty easily from everywhere in the city, and once you're there, there's not a place in the city that's not reachable. It's also the home base for the nationwide train system. San Francisco could learn a lot from Rome in terms of public transportation.
