Just as the song was starting to peak, Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks made the infamous "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas" remark.
Before that point, listeners heard it as a song that seemed to be about a remembering the sacrifice of a lost Vietnam soldier. Immediately after the remark was publicized, however, the song took on the interpretation of being a war protest song. It was quickly dropped from most country music airplay lists as a result.
The song isn't really about anger or protest, though, it's really about the private pain that a high school girl feels after she finds her boyfriend has been killed in Vietnam. It's a very touching song, but not one that has ever felt that liberal to me.
