Almost by definition, every death listed here is tragic, as they all appear to have been premature. Redding, though, was a truly phenomenal talent, and his reputation as a soul singer is justifiably legendary. Everyone knows "Sittin' On The Dock of the Bay" which is still a joy to listen to despite its having been overplayed over the years, but listen to his less-well known but sizzling version of "Respect" or the heartbreakingly poignant "Ole Man Trouble" and you immediately recognize that Redding's talent was one-of-a-kind magical, and the dimension of his loss when considering 20th century (and, so far at least, 21st century) musical greatness is incalculable.

Otis Redding's record "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" was a huge hit and was recorded just before he died in a plane crash in late 1967. He had already put out such soul classics as "I've Been Loving You too Long" and "Try a Little Tenderness." He had also been a hit with his performance at Monterey. But it is that last song, "Dock of the Bay", that hints at even greater things to come. All three songs mentioned here are among the greatest of the 1960's.

My favorite soul artist and vocalist. His career was defined by Dock of The Bay but his catalog is loaded with fantastic songs.

I could easily get through solitary confinement if I could have a recording of 'Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay.'

Tragic in that he was snatched in his prime and just as the world was beginning to take notice.

I second Limpin Trenchfoots sentiments.Otis was young, talented and very promising when his life was ended all too soon in an accident.

A top score here on the tragimeter. Otis died in a plane crash - plunging into an icy cold lake/river - aged 26 and still at the top of his game.
