If it was relatively a good ride you should tip. The only time I wouldn't tip is if it was the cab ride from hell.

I agree with sfalconer. The same thing happened to me in San Fran. I just chalked it off as too much caffeine!

Anyway, the way I see it, I do believe in tipping a cab driver, if they do their job well.

I would always tip a cabbie, as long as they weren't a complete jerk-off.  Most of these guys rent the cab for a shift during the day, and when they get on the road they're already in the hole.  It doesn't matter how much is earned in tips and fairs - they keep everything - but that cab fee can be pretty steep, sometimes upwards of $200 depending on the shift/ city.  I go with the 20% unless they happened to be particularly charming.  I do recall one time memorable cab ride, in Montreal circa 1999, when a cabbie missed the exit for Casino De Montreal, and he jammed it in reverse and went backwards a good tenth of a mile.

Yep, unless I have to direct them myself.

Of course, that is part of the fare.

It depends on whether or not we take the scenic route. I generally have a cost in mind when I hop in a cab. If the cabbie drives fast and the fare is lower, then he gets the savings as an add on to his tip. If he is trying to save on gas and reduce wear on his tires, I assume he's making his own tip by running up my fare.

Of course that only works when I take a cab here in my town and I know the routes/traffic times. If I'm travelling on business, I want to make sure I get to the airport/meeting on time and that I get a receipt. If I get both the tip is generous, without being extravagent.

The last time i took a cab ride, the driver added the tip to the total cost!

If he gives me my change broken down he gets a tip....otherwise no. I rarely take a cab though.

I once took a cab ride in San Francisco when the wild ride was over I was so busy kissing the ground I forgot to give the drive/pilot a tip.

Yes but dont go overboard because I worked for a cab company and I know the drivers get to keep 40 percent of the gross.

I was raised that you always tip a driver, and I've always followed this rule.
