This is a pure straw man. I know of no environmentalist who believes this. Maybe there's someone out there, but I haven't met him.

I've gone fishing before and I'll do it again.

That's a pretty broad-stroking brush you are tarring with there, Eschew, but I suppose generalizations like this make it easier to polarize environmentalists.

I know plenty of hunters and fishermen out here and I think many of them are concerned about the environment.

On the other hand, most level-headed people who are concerned about animal welfare think more about factory farming than those guys out there on the lake at the end of my field with their beer bottles, portable TVs and fishing rods, catching the incidental fish through a hole in the ice.

Okay, I might agree with this to a point. But, I would also suggest that people who have no more interest in nature other than to use, exploit or destroy it (i.e., hunters and fishermen) also have limited knowledge of it. You need to have a deep respect and love for something to really get what it's about - and that doesn't include a lust for blowing it away every chance you get - whether you can admit that or not. On second thought, I'll take the pasty faced Manhattenites over the gun wielding Trogladites - at least they appear to have a heart.

Aha! Yes, it seems that those most out of touch with nature know the most about it. Hmm...
