Love the goofy lyrics, still likeable today.

The first and last good song by Beck. Everything else has been nothing but junk. His new single is horrific.

Back in the day I would have rated Beck's "Loser" as a five star song, but the single has faded a bit to my ears. That's not to say it's lost too much luster, but it has always sounded to me like a mellower version of "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys (which was released the same year). As another comment noted, a portion of the lyrics remained a mystery for some time, presumably allowing the listener to sing whatever the words sounded like to them. If memory serves, the video looked like a low-production student film (and perhaps that's what it was). Anyway, this single is the leadoff track on Beck's debut "Mellow Gold", which was an acquired taste (save for the closing "Blackhole"), but "Loser" still remains the clear gem on the release. "Loser" charted in the U.S. for 15 weeks in 1994, peaking at #10, and Im not aware of any decent covers.

That first line, "Soy un perdador," is probably one of the most mangled lines in rock music. Most people didn't realize what he was saying at first.. or that the words were Spanish. My own favorite line: "In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey."

Catchy and bizarre. The whole CD is pretty good if you like the hits.Beck seems adept at finding new sounds, blending them skillfully with a fat beat, and then writing endearingly quirky lyrics to top it all off.

Beck is a genius. This is the one that started it all!
