Remington 581 4

This rifle was introduced in the mid to late 60's. No longer in production and may be found as the 581-S variant. These rifles have a very strong action and in stock form are very serviceable and accurate rimfire sporters. Trigger pull is a mite on the heavy side for shooting groups of the bench or target work, but they do make a pretty decent platform for an accurate rifle. Available used from $120- $200 dollars or maybe a little more depending on condition, you'll definitely get your money's worth.

This series of rifles was also offered in single shot (580) and tube fed (582) versions. An "upscale" version of the rifle with a much nicer stock, a tapered sporter barrel, and an adjustable trigger (541-S) was offered and these are bringing $400-650, again depending on condition. An entry level target rifle, the 540X was introduced in the early 1970 time frame and was a wonderful rifle for the price. Not that many were made. Later a version with a different, position style stock was offered, the 540XR. The last version offered based on the 581 receiver was the 541T and 541THB series. While the 541-S an T versions are very nice rifles, they are pretty expensive now as they are highly sought after. There was one other version I forgot to mention above, two if you count the smootbore version. They also made a less nicely finished version of the 540X without the adjustable trigger for the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). These are available for a reasonable price from the DCM when they become available, but there is a lot of speculative buying and selling that goes on, so be cautious regarding the price you pay for one of those. Good rifles, but the prices can be overly inflated by the speculators.

It's a shame that Remington decided to discontinue this series.

Enjoy!
