 | zuchinibut (36) 11/06/2007 | I agree with all 3 previous comments. A wedding is a big deal, and is one of those things in life that shouldn't be done cheaply. If you expect most people to have a good time at your wedding reception, you need to pay up for an open bar. Most of your guests have already paid good money for a gift and travel expenses to attend your wedding. If you are looking to cut costs for your reception, then do it somewhere else. My wife and I spent 20 dollars for a cake that was big enough for us to slice and enjoy by ourselves. However, we had an open bar and a great band. Nobody complained about not getting cake or that the flowers came from Sams Club.

 | VirileVagabond (32) 07/31/2006 | People should know by kindergarten that anything worth doing is worth doing right, and that goes especially for weddings. Ms Manners and the virile one both frown on guests (for any event) being required to pay for anything. If the hosts can't afford drinks, then they should have a dry wedding so expectations are set (but the wedding party should also expect a short reception). The bottom line is that wedding guests are offering gifts to the couple and have often traveled long distances to be part of the event, so requesting payment for services is bad protocol at the very least.

 | trebon1038 (62) 07/24/2006 | The last wedding I went to the reception was upstairs in a hotel. They started out having free draft beer and mixed drinks but you had to pay for shots. Then the mixed drinks had to be paid for but you were unaware of this until you stood in line and got up there with no money on you....then without warning the beer cost money. My friends and I started going to the bar downstairs to buy our beers. If you have a cash bar let it be known up front.....but its better to have an open bar and let the bartender get tips.

 | CanadaSucks (45) 07/24/2006 | I don't care what the $ situation is. . .don't throw a real wedding without an open bar. . .your guests will cringe and hate you and lie to you about how great the wedding was. . .I attended one of these and the 'karma' (or lack thereof) from the guests dragged down the whole day due to being grumpy of rustling through clumps of dollar bills for drinks. . .
