he was dealt a pretty cruel blow to have these deformities. forced to be in a "freak show" to even live. thank goodness rescued the final years of his life to at least be treated with some dignity that he deserved. a kind intelligent man who may not be pretty on the outside but was beautiful on the inside. { I know some people sneer at that} too bad our faces do not match our inner personalities. wonder what each person would look like then? wonder if he would have lived longer and had some surgeries with better medical technology?

I don't think he belongs on the list. And he was supposedly a wonderful person, which made him beautiful on the inside.

Well he didn't have the worst life ever considering his deformity. But yeah, probably wouldn't want to meet him in person.

A 19th Century circus freak depicted in David Lynch's movie The Elephant Man, Joseph Merrick was so deformed he could not even lie down to sleep. Merrick was an kind and intelligent individual, whose deformities sadly made it impossible for him to live a normal life.

Had he lived today the FBI could have used him where they could not get surveillance equipment. I'll bet he didn't miss much.

He is referered to in the Bare-Naked Ladies song, "If I Had a Million Dollars. "

Though Joseph Merrick's ugliness was due to a medical deformity (i.e. Proteus Syndrome), he did make a living as a carnival sideshow attraction, so I suppose he's still fair game for this list. Prior to Merrick finding refuge in a Victorian hospital, he was shunned by family and society due to his horrific appearance. Easily deserving 5 stars, Joseph Carey Merrick lived from 1862 to 1890.
