Nevertheless this is a clear misnomer and often results in confusing many who aren't schooled in law. "International law" is a misnomer in that presently the world is divided among sovereign nation states and law is essentially the rules that a sovereign imposes upon its subjects. Be definition one sovereign cannot impose its will on another sovereign (or its subjects) without negating the very sovereignty of the party being imposed upon. Law requires the will and the ability of a sovereign to exercise its authority. Treaties are often claimed as "international law"; however, a treaty is simply a voluntary agreement between sovereigns that can't be enforced by any real means other than war (involuntary) or diplomacy (voluntary), and while a treaty is being honored, the treaty simple becomes enforced domestic law.
