Black Panther salute in Mexico City (1968)

At the medal ceremony for the 200m sprint, American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos (first and third place) raised their fists in a “Black Panther” salute in protest to racism in America.

Dont give me any nonsense about how political gestures don`t belong on the Olympic stage.  The Olympics are about nothing but politics.

Or aren`t you paying attention to what`s going on in Beijing

To echo CanadaSucks: This ... appalling ??? Smith and Carlos recognized the politics at work in the Games, and they used the opportunity well to make an important political point. As recounted in Dave Zirin's Welcome to the Terrordome, the wonderful thing about the moment is that the white Australian silver medalist, Peter Norman (may he rest in peace), was just as much a supporter of the gesture as Smith and Carlos. He stood up there with them, wearing a badge in support, and got roasted over the coals by the Australian government in retaliation for it. To this day, the two Black Panthers point out that Peter Norman was just as courageous as they were. He would have done the salute, too, but the spectacle of a white guy raising his fist in support of the Panthers would have made the moment look really silly ...

There are better ways of showing your support for something than destroying the olympics which is supposed to be deviod of political divides

Defend their right to freedom of speech and political expression, but it's pretty damn hypocritical of them to accept medals or even participate in the Olympics, as they were essentially representing a country that they viewed as repressive of their race...

Appalling? I thought it was an appropriate gesture of protest. (Although I think the Black Panthers were overrated, loud thugs) The protest was appropriate to the times.

I kinda liked it. They used an achievement as a statement against unfair practices in our country.

While no one was physically hurt or gained a competitive edge from the Black Panther Salute, the problem with this was the fact that the act injected politics into an event that was designed to be non-political. This relatively small gesture seemed to raise the bar yet again only four years removed from the subsequent events in Munich. While obviously tame by contemporary standards, this is how things get changed from how they were intended to be.
