A Willie Pep vs. Salvador Sanchez fight would have been similar to a Pernell Whitaker vs. Sugar Ray Leonard bout. Pep, like Whitaker, was a defensive genius who frustrated his opponents with slick movements and counterstrikes. And though Pep thrived on opponents who agressively pursued him inside the ring, Salvador Sanchez was extraordinarily patient for his age as a fighter. If Sanchez kept his head and was simultaneously agressive enough to land clean punches (and warrant points from the judges), he might have been able to pull of a very close decision. But keep in mind, at worst, this paticular fight might only be for purist who likes watching fights between fighters of contrasting styles. This fight is no exception.

I don know about this one. Sanchez and Pep are tied at 1st. in my all time featherweight list, with Saddler a close 3rd.

We may currently be in the golden age of featherweights-since Sandy Saddler and Willie Pep-so this matchup is particularly interesting. And it's not easy thinking of a better featherweight between Pep-Saddler and now. It's also important to remember that the Pep generally seen on film-against Saddler and other opponents, came after an airplane crash-in which he was one of two survivors and never expected to box again. Tragically,Sanchez didn't survive his automobile accident.
