They had just converted from the token system to the card system when I last rode the T. This is a cheap, reliable way to travel throughout the Boston area. Sometimes the trains can be a bit slow, and some of the trains are in a state of mild disrepair.

I think the T is a very organized system, getting you to where you need to go in boston metro. Always not so clean, yet I always feel safe riding it. Its got an old school feel to it too, which i like. I dont really like ruggles station.....sketchy at times.

As of 2007, the T drastically raised their fares (1.70 or 1.90, depending on what card you use), meaning it's no longer one of the best deals in public transportation. (There used to be literally free rides on some stretches of the green line -- that's over now.) But no one will change their daily commute pattern based on the rates, since Boston is one of the worst driving cities in the world, and the price increase may eventually help to lift the system out of its massive debt. (So they say, though someone in Boston may be also be lining their pockets, as usual around here.) The quality of the T varies radically depending on what line you're on, and you almost have to pick your residence based on that fact: the orange and (especially) the red lines are very fast and more frequent than just about any town I've been in, while the green line is miserable, the exact opposite. (There's actually a route which is called the silver line for some reason, but it's actually just a BUS!) Buses are not very good (see the comment about driving above). Accomodations for the disabled are scandalous and borderline illegal (at least 1/3 of the stations have no elevator). After creating one of the most confusing card systems ever devised, where there were something like five ways of paying a fare, the Charlie card is finally getting standardized. Overall, I think the system is a little underrated -- much better than most I've used.

It's getting older and rusty by the day. . .as if Boston needs another transportation problem. . .

Everyone used to rave about the T. I wasn't one of the fans. Old, rickety and confusing, with different colored lines going all over the place, I think it's in need of a makeover.

Great way to effectively travel the city. Only costs $1.25 and they still use tokens as well as travel cards. You can tell the infrastructure is old , yet the passenger cars are newer. Maps to describe the routes are clear and descriptive. System moves at a busy enough pace. Passenger cars are a bit awkward to travel in though because of the varied ground level at the stops. Riders are aggressive in moving thru terminals and cars. Still a great system that goes pretty much to all the areas you want to go to in the Boston area.

TriSec - worst public transit system on earth? Compared to where? Clearly exagerated. Yes the MBTA's infrastructure is rather old and could use some updating but it operates just fine and is clearly a commuters best option of getting in and around the city. The system is VERY extensive both in town and the commuter rail out to the suburbs and covers more area than most cities do. Before judging Boston as having the worst transit system on earth try riding transit in Seattle- close to non existant: no trains, all buses and they are still trying to get their act together as they've been trying to plan mass transit there for decades without laying any track. Or try riding transit in Philadelphia. SEPTA's system is very dirty, scary, and ranked very low on this list. I'm pretty satisfied with the MBTA. It works.

I like the T for getting around Boston - certainly it beats driving on totally confusing and crazy streets. The only problem with the T is that it is on street level downtown, and the stops are so close together that, frequently, it's faster to walk than to take the train!

The MBTA is an awesome transportation system it gets me everywhere I need to go every time. DO NOT believe those websites and people telling you its an awful system. It may have some bugs but that usually happens rarely. I'd reccomend you use it if you go to Boston. Besides it is not every day you visit Boston the city with the lowest fares on the subway.

I actually like the T. You can get pretty much anywhere, and while the trains get pretty crowded, not every city has such good coverage. I spent last week in Boston and was able to whip all over the city on public transportation without any problems - I can't say the same for San Francisco.
