 | GenghisTheHun (173) 01/17/2007 | Bushrangers were originally escaped convicts who hid out in the Australian bush and lived by raid and robbery. Eventually civilization caught up with them. With better communications, including the telegraph, and denser settlement, they couldn't hide any more.
I suppose Jack Duggan or Jack Donohue, the Wild Colonial Boy, was another bushranger.
Ned Kelly was a noted bushranger. As the tories, raparees, moss troopers and others, the bushrangers had a political component to their activities in that they opposed oppressive colonial government. The bushrangers are romanticized in many poems and ballads.
