Um, as tempting as it is to make a bad joke here, I think I'll just give it one star and move on.

No! NO! NONononnonononononon. . .Don't give me the 'obligatory RIA 5-star-rating-fest-because-the-person-just-died'. . .no way. Never liked this song. It wasn't terrible. . .but certainly overrated.

I'm not a Michael Jackson fan, but I do like this song. The Eddie Van Halen solo certainly doesn't hurt.

It is easy to forget most of us owned a copy of Thriller! While he may be a freak he has some great songs. This song has a nice guitar solo by Eddie Van Halen in the middle. A great song and an admitted great album.

The combination of the Michael Jackson's marvellous vocals, Steve Lukather's funky licks and of course, the standard Eddie Van Halen solo made this, for me, the highlight of a stellar career for the King of Pop.

Obviously "Beat It" was Michael Jackson's version of a rock song, and one can't really claim he didn't make a good faith effort. The producer (namely Quincy Jones) recruited some top talent to back the song, namely Steve and Jeff Porcaro (from Toto), Steve Lukather (also from Toto), and the easily recognized guitar of Eddie Van Halen. Nevertheless, Jackson's underlying dance grooves will always negate any rock credibility, but the single remains an interesting attempt. Per AMG, Van Halen originally thought that Quincy's attempts to reach him were crank calls, resulting in hang-ups and a string of choice words. Eventually, he recorded the guitar work for free. "Beat It" charted in the U.S. for 18 weeks in 1983, peaking at #1. Oddly enough, there have been no notable covers.
