UPDATED--August 1, 2007. Today is the anniversary of the Battle of St. Gotthard where the Imperial forces crushed the Mohammedan Turks. It comes to mind that we need some of that spirit in Europe today. ORIGINAL COMMENT: Today is August 1, 2006. On this day in history, 1664, imperial Austrian forces crushed the Ottoman Turks in the Battle of St. Gotthard in Western Hungary. The "religion of peace" Mohammedan Turks were again on a campaign of looting, burning, raping, killing and further spreading "peace" in Central Europe. The Turks were met at St. Gotthard by the Imperial Austrian Army under Raimondo Montecuccoli. The Austrians had the smaller force but were better lead. The defeat of the Turks was so crushing that they made peace that lasted for twenty years until the Turks went on the Vienna Campaign of 1683, of course, further to spread "peace" in the area. The battle is significant because it was the beginning of the end of Turkish dominance in the area. The Christian powers could take heart that, at last, the Ottomans could be stopped. Montecuccoli was in interesting fellow and you should read a few lines of his bio at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raimondo_Montecuccoli
