Dempsey was a fine defensive catcher who spent the majority of his long career with the Orioles, though he did play for a few other clubs too. He was known as being a bit of a clubhouse clown/ cut- up. As a hitter, Dempsey was usually not much with the stick, but he really didn't have to be with his fine defense, and there were other reasons that he stuck around so long, for one thing he was a smart player.
