Banjo hitting shortstop, but what a glove. Seemed effortlessly brilliant, but seldom spectacular. A key component of the great Orioles teams skippered by Earl Weaver, which were founded on "pitching, defense and three run homers."

Looking back on his stats, it seems almost impossible that a guy could stick around for 18 years when he only hit .228 for his career. However, Belanger was a great defensive shortstop who won 8 Gold Gloves as an Oriole. He was also around for so many of the O's great seasons, that he is thought of as a good Oriole, despite his lack of offensive production.

Weak hitter, but one of the greatest fielding shortstops of the 60's and 70's. I didn't catch him in his prime, by the time I saw him play the Orioles had the eminently forgettable Kiko Garcia as their primary shortstop while Belanger was a part timer, but the esteem this guy is held in for his fielding prowess is of legendary proportions. A big contributor to the success of their pitching staff, for years, you could count on the Orioles to have at least one, and sometimes several, twenty game winners, and year in year out from the late 60's through the early 80's, you could also count on them to be at the very least, a contender in the A.L. East. He briefly played for L.A. at the end of his career and was very active in the baseball union. He died a few years ago. One of the great defensive players at his position.
