It made for great ESPN-style TV for a couple of weeks. The problem was that the manager was absolutely right and the ump decided to stand by a call that was so obviously wrong everybody knew it. (It looked for a moment like the ump's seeing-eye dog might get hurt but he was fine) I've seen one where the guy slid into second (against my team) with his foot PLANTED innside the glove of the second baseman, with the ball still in it! It was funnier when the 2nd baseman removed his glove, and the guy kept his foot on the base, IN THE GLOVE, WITH THE BALL STILL IN IT, WHILE WE ARGUED! The ump said, "I made the call and I'm sticking with it, " even as we drew him over, pointing to the foot in the glove. Nobody's perfect, but umps should avoid being a perfect idiot when they can. The call stood, the guy stayed at second, and could hardly stop laughing. Is this episode "bad" for baseball? Yes, in the same strange way that spectacular crashes are "bad" for NASCAR. If it's bad, why are they always on the highlight packages?
