Steinbrenner claimed to have scrapped a couple of Dodger fans in an elevator who had questioned the abilities of the Yankees.

Given the almost universal dislike for Steinbrenner throughout baseball fandom, it is a telling comment on the Yankee owner's veracity that no one ever came forward to take credit for the event.

This one was hilarious, and one of those things that only Steinbrenner could come up with. Steinbrenner, during the '81 Series, which the Yankees lost to the Dodgers in 6, claimed to have hurt his hand fighting off Dodgers fans who'd insulted the integrity of the Yankees in an elevator. While I can't say with any absolute certainty that the story was false, this seems highly dubious at best.
