 | Randyman (105) 06/20/2008 | Johnny's Shrimp Boat was originally located across from the old Main Street boxing gym and had reached an iconic status as the best of the greasy spoon dives in Los Angeles. They closed down about twenty years ago and resurfaced as a small chain. They lost nothing in the transistion. I go to the one in Whittier. If you don't mind heartburn with your meal this is the place for you. This is not classic gourmet food, but it is good. The specialty is a breaded shrimp similar to a tempura but not quite and served with a combination of beans, rice and or chili and gravy. The short ribs are good and so is the fish and chips.
Years ago when it was located on Main Street in the heart of skid row, you literally had to walk over the bums and drunks to get through the door. It was small and had no place to sit so you ate standing on the sidewalk or walked to your car. It was part of the charm.
