He was fired, he didn't quit, so it wasn't his career decision.

Was it a good decision for the Beatles? Appears to have been.

He didn't leave, he was fired, and the band didn't even have the guts to tell him in person. They had their manager at the time, Brian Epstein, do it. To this day, I don't think the one surviving member, Paul McCartney, has been man enough to apologize to Pete for the way they handled it.

A bad move for Pete Best but a good move for the Beatles. In every interview that I have seen with Mr Best as well as those that I have seen or read about by others who were involved with the Beatles at that time, Pete was released from the Beatles against his will. Many years ago before the Beatles Anthology series came out, I had a friend whose dad (Robert Gallo) was one of the recording engineers for the Beatles back in their Liverpool days. He played for me an album called "The Best Of The Beatles" which were tracks that were recorded when Pete Best was their drummer. When I listened to the album the truth was not hard to find...... Ringo Starr was a far better drummer than Pete Best. While Pete may have been the original cute Beatle and a crowd pleaser in their early days there is no way the Beatles could have reached their musical zenith, and possibly their creative heights, had Pete Best remained their drummer. In the end, it wasn't all together a negative move for Pete Best because now the recordings that feature him are in demand, and he is finally receiving some financial compensation for his work with the band and he still has the honor of being able to say that he is one of the original Beatles.

There has always been some dispute over whether Pete Best (the original drummer for the Beatles) left the band of his own volition or was unceremoniously dismissed. Most likely the latter, as apparently Best was a bit of a loner and was considered the original "cute Beatle" (resulting in some jealousy from John, Paul and George). Either way, Best made one of the worst career moves in history by either leaving by choice or alienating his fellow band mates. Randolph Peter Best was born November 24, 1941 in Madras, India.
