Pre Super-Bowl UPDATE: The Bears are really the only team in the NFC good enough to beat any of the AFC teams. New Orleans had that explosive offensive, lead by Drew Brees arm and Deuce McAllster and Reggie Bush's running, but Chicago's defense, as I said in the beginning of the season, made the difference. They followed their game plan, and reduced the impact of their liabilities, namely Rex Grossman, who literally played with a strait jacket on. It helped, he didn't turn the ball over once and had 3 TD's to his credit. New Orleans as opposed turned it over 4 times, killing critical downfield drives for them. Chicago played well, but the Saint's mistakes was also another critical factor behind their win. Of course, the bad weather in Chicago didn't help New Orleans, who plays in a dome. That was the difference maker in this game, and it demonstrates the importance of homefield advantage. If they keep up the offensive production, this will be "da Bears" year for a run. They already have one of the best defenses in the league behind them, and that's something important to have, especially in the playoffs.

UPDATE JANUARY 21, 2007. The Bears did it and soundly thrashed the Saints to sail into Miami. The AFC is still undecided as I write these lines. Much crow must be eaten on Monday by all the sports pros who predicted a Saints win. ORIGINAL COMMENT: I write this as week 14 appears on the horizon and the Bears soundly whipped the Rams on Monday Night Football. Grossman looks as if he came back from Pluto, and actually played a good game. If the Bears play the same quality of football as they played against the Rams, they might well make it to Miami!

Just as long as Grossman doesn't choke.

If Grossman continues to improve and the defense plays to their capabilities (very strong), Da Bears could go far...

The Bears still may have the best defense in the league, and now just need to work on the offense. The big question again is if Grossman can stay healthy. If he does struggle or get injured though, I love the decision to bring in Brian Griese as a backup. He is a QB who is experienced enough to give you a solid shot at winning in the playoffs.
