A grim, unsettling, and riveting read, Ellroy's memoirs of his disturbing childhood, adolescence and early adulthood is a compelling read.

From his mother's grisly murder, to his voyeuristic teens, he leads a life skirting depravity, which he clearly loots heavily for his brilliant novels.
