The original wall predates the rise of Rome, but the more familiar stone and brick wall we see today dates back to the Ming Dynasty (which was contemporary with the European Age of Discovery). Much (if not most) of the existing portions of the wall are in disrepair, and I was disappointed to discover upon my visit to the section outside of Beijing that this part has been essentially rebuilt for tourists. Nevertheless, it remains an impressive structure, and even the Beijing section is physically taxing to climb.
