 | edt4 (99) 04/18/2008 | As a kid, I was addicted to soda, and Coke was my soda of choice. My parents were always pushing me to drink water or fruit juice, but I stubbornly held out for soda. Times change: now I drink a ton of water and grape fruit juice every day, and very, very little soda. Sometimes, in the midst of a migraine, I'll go for a Coke (which now comes out of the vending machine in an enormous plastic bottle that I can't hope to finish by myself), as that always used to soothe my stomach a bit. Something's different, though...I don't know if it's the fact that they use corn syrup now instead of real sugar (someone recently told me that if you get Coke from Mexico, they still use the real sugar in the making of it, and sell it in the old-style glass bottles), or they've monkeyed around with the old taste, or what, but that old love I used to have for soda in general and Coke in particular is gone. Probably just as well.

It's not only a great soft drink, but also an international institution, as evidenced by its nearly universal market penetration and recognition. While sometimes I crave its primary rival Pepsi, most of the time there is no substitute when I have the option between the two (as Pepsi is usually just too sweet). Always cures what ails you. If memory serves, Coca-Cola is the most valuable brand-name and trademark in the world.
